October 29th marked Rawky Marcy’s first upscaling educational event. Partnering with Penn State student organization, Visionary Visual Arts, we offered an open studio to teach students the potential of upscaling clothes. At this open studio, we provided a collection of free used clothes (mostly blank) for the students to select from, and a plethora of options of paint markers for the students to customize with. With this activity, we hoped to encourage our students to have fun and not worry about creating a beautiful or perfect design. I advised them to just paint based on emotions and to not think too much about what they are doing, the finished product should be something you would feel confident to wear, not a perfect example of a shirt design.
Of the attendees, some were graphic designers, others were engineers, but everyone got together to upscale clothes for themselves, out of otherwise forgotten garments. The attendees sat around listening to music, talking about life and art, and creating some beautiful work that they could bring home, wear, wash, and repeat. Even one of the students left saying that he would like to continue to do this for himself, this is the ultimate mission of our brand: to inspire the world. We know that humans are among the most creative creatures on this planet, to sit around and let that go by the wayside would be a huge waste of potential. We have so much at our fingertips and so much we can do with our excess goods, especially as American consumers. Why not do what you can to be yourself and be these best you can be?
We are so grateful for all those who were able to attend our first open studio, and those who helped out in any way. This was a dream come true and the first of many to come, as this mission will never fade.
